If you’re kids aren’t already excited (or at least intrigued) by the name of this meal, they will definitely be amped to help make something ‘sloppy’ 🙂 Most of the tasks for this dish are simple, i.e. chopping, measuring, pouring, stirring. No difficult technique; hence, super easy for kids. It’s also pretty fun to put a heaping spoonful of messiness on a bun and see who can eat the sandwich without anything falling out. Challenge! Haha.
While your kids are helping out, you can also pause to discuss which FOOD GROUP each ingredient belongs to and share some fun facts about this meal’s featured ingredient: GROUND BEEF.
Here are some creative ways for your kid to be your personal Sous Chef as you make our Old Fashioned Sloppy Joes. Simply hover over each image for details. Make sure your little dudes wash their hands before starting!

Make sure your kiddo empties the baster into an old can or jar, and you dispose of the grease in the trash (not sink drain).

ADD THE CHEESE!
Kids will like watching it melt into the meat.
STIR SLOPPY JOE MIX UNTIL WELL BLENDED
Ask your kid when they think the mix is ready, to give them some ownership over the process.
We always use a Pyrex Measuring Cup to measure liquid ingredients.
*Note: For toddlers especially, these tasks require adult supervision and/or assistance, as items may be sharp, hot or otherwise dangerous.
