Our family just moved to a brand new city! It's been quite an exciting week, but not without moments of extreme chaos and heightened stress 🙂
The day of our move, we found out that our stove and hot water weren't working (we were in the process of converting our home to natural gas). Additionally, we had inherited a very complicated oven and had not yet located its manual. That being said, cooking was a challenge those first few days!
Luckily, my mom came up with the brilliant idea of making hot dogs with crescent rolls. This would be a guaranteed "win" with the kids, and we could use our toaster oven for the baking! We decided to pair the hot dogs with some raw veggies and my sister's delicious homemade ranch sauce for dipping. Lucky for us, we had already unpacked our Vitamix, which was just what we needed for making the sauce.
This was a super easy recipe and it took us no time at all. My daughter helped make the sauce and both my kids could not get enough of it. We ended up with more ranch sauce than we needed, so we actually used the leftover ranch for a few days for salads, etc. It was a great way to get some veggies in my kiddos!
And of course, we all absolutely loved the crescent rolls as "buns" for our hot dogs. In fact, my kids completely devoured theirs and ended up eating half of mine!
A Note about Hot Dogs: Unfortunately, hot dogs are generally heavily processed and loaded with nitrates. I have no problem with my kids having a traditional hot dog once in a while, but in our house, we prefer to eat organic hot dogs, like offered by Applegate. These hot dogs contain no antibiotics, nitrates or hormones. They may be pricier, but I really feel the added cost to buy organic hot dogs is worth it!
This truly was a low maintenance dinner. If you wanted to step it up a bit, you might also consider pairing the crescent roll hot dogs with one of our potato side dishes. If my stove had been working, I may also have served the crescent hot dogs with our Bow Tie Pasta Salad .
🌈 KIDIFY THE MEAL 🌈
🍅Dipping sauces galore! My kids love having options! In addition to the ranch dressing, we also gave the kids a side of ketchup, mustard, and some melted cheese. Surprisingly, the ranch sauce was the biggest hit!
🍅Kids choose the veggies! We let the kids decide which veggies they wanted with their crescent roll hot dogs. They picked out some red bell peppers, carrots and broccoli, but just about any veggie would work well with the ranch dipping sauce.
🍴 MODIFY THE MEAL🍴
🍅Make it Gluten Free! Simply, eliminate the crescent roll. You can just eat this as a hot dog, with a gluten free bun, like Udi's. Or, if you have extra time, you can make your own gluten free crescent rolls. This is a great GF recipe!
🍅Make it Vegetarian! The only non-vegetarian aspect of this meal is the hot dog. In fact, even the Pillsbury crescent rolls are vegan. So, you can swap the hot dog with a meatless option, like Worthington's Loma Linda Big Franks or Vega-Links.

Crescent Roll Hot Dogs with Homemade Ranch Dipping Sauce
- 1 can crescent rolls
- 8 hot dogs
- 1 red bell pepper (de-seeded & sliced)
- 1 small head broccoli (chopped into florets)
- 1 handful baby carrots
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup greek yogurt
- 1 T fresh chives (chopped)
- 1 T dried parsley
- 1/2 T salt
- 1 t onion powder
- 1 t garlic powder
- 1/2 t dill
- 1/2 t black pepper
- 1/2 t thyme
- 1/2 t mustard powder
- 1/4 t paprika
- Preheat oven to 350.
- Open can of crescent rolls. Separate into 8 individual rolls. Starting at the widest end, stretch the crescent roll to fit the widest part of the hot dog and roll crescent roll around the hot dog. Repeat for all 8 hot dogs and place evenly on baking sheet. Bake for 12 minutes.
- Meanwhile, prepare the ranch dipping sauce. Using a blender, Vitamix, or whatever you got, combine sour cream, greek yogurt and all the spices. Blend until ingredients are evenly distributed and mixture thickens a bit, stopping to scrape the sides of the blender with a spatula.
