Ingredients

Instructions

  • Melt butter in a medium pot on low heat, stirring occasionally. Once butter is melted, stir in vanilla and almond extracts.
  • Add marshmallows to the butter, increase the heat a tad, and stir occasionally until all marshmallows are completely melted. Remove pot from heat. Stir in red food coloring until fully mixed in.
  • Fold Rice Krispies [RK] into the pot mixture until everything is combined. Spray your casserole dish, and spread RK mixture evenly into the dish. Let cool for 1-2 minutes.
  • Spray a piece of parchment paper next to the dish. Press a candy cane cookie cutter into the RK pan. Wiggle and press the treat out of the cookie cutter gently, and lay the candy cane on the parchment paper. Repeat until you've cut out roughly 12 candy canes.
  • Fill a small bowl with white candy melts and microwave for 45 seconds. Stir and repeat. Pour melted candy into a Ziploc bag, make a small cut in the corner of the bag, and seal the bag. Squeeze the bag over the candy canes to make a striped pattern. Optional: add sprinkles.
  • Repeat steps 1-4, but with green food coloring and a Christmas tree cookie cutter. Then use another Ziploc bag to pipe zig-zag lines across the trees, like stringed Christmas lights. Add mini M&M's to the lines, like ornaments.

Notes

    • πŸ›‘ IMPORTANT NOTE: our recipe is for one batch of RK treats (either 12 candy canes or 12 Xmas trees). To make both the candy canes and Xmas trees, you need to increase the time and double the ingredients.
    • You can also do all your cooking in the microwave. Using microwave-safe bowls, make sure you microwave in short spurts of time so nothing burns.
    • RK treats are super sticky, so definitely use a nonstick pan if you can!
    • Use more food coloring than you think you need because when you add the RKs to your pan, the color gets diluted.
    • Don't reform your RK mixture more than once (to make more shapes). It gets a lot tougher, the more you handle it.
    • Add your sprinkles and M&M's to the RK treats while the melted chocolate piping is still gooey; otherwise, they won't stick on.
    • It could take up to 10 minutes for your piping to cool, FYI.
    • After your piping has cooled, remove the excess - snap it off with your fingers or cut it off with scissors.
