Why 28 Minutes?
Our 28-minute timeframe started in real life — during the small window of screen time we saved for meal prep when our kids were little. We noticed most PBS Kids shows ran a little less than 30 minutes, so we challenged ourselves to get dinner on the table before an episode ended.
Over time, we fell in love with the idea of meals that take less than 30 minutes. And while we don’t always rely on screen time (though some nights, that downtime just makes sense!), we’ve also created simple crafts and age-appropriate kitchen tasks to keep kids engaged while you cook.
That simple, flexible rhythm became our framework — and just like that, the Platein28 approach was born.
🔎 The Types of Meals That Make 28 Minutes Possible
Not all “30-minute dinners” are truly 30 minutes — some only count oven time or assume nonstop prep, which isn’t real life. At Platein28, once you start cooking, dinner is ready in 28 minutes or less. We keep steps simple, ingredients practical, and rely on predictable formats that make weeknights actually work. Here are the kinds of dinners that help keep evenings running smoothly.

🥘 One-Pan & One-Pot Dinners
When weeknights are busy, fewer dishes matter just as much as faster cook times. Our one-pan and one-pot dinners keep things simple—from prep to cleanup—so you’re not juggling burners or scrubbing extra pans afterward. From cozy soups and skillet meals to pasta dishes and sandwiches, these are the kinds of dinners that make weeknights feel more manageable.
If you need a good starting point, our One Pot Ground Turkey Enchilada Skillet is bold, quick to make, and easy to customize with individual toppings. This Sausage Tortellini Soup comes together in a single pot and is especially popular thanks to the cheesy tortellini. And when flexibility matters most, the Southwest Chicken Bowl lets everyone build their own plate with their favorite toppings—perfect for picky eaters.
✋🏼 Recipes with 5 Ingredients or Less
Some nights call for the simplest possible solution. When your pantry is running low or your energy is even lower, 5-ingredient dinners can be a lifesaver.
These recipes focus on minimal ingredients without sacrificing flavor. Recipes like One Pan Boneless Buffalo Chicken Thighs, Sausage, Egg and Cheese Breakfast Sliders, and Gnocchi with Pesto Sauce and Roasted Tomatoes rely on simple ingredients but still deliver big flavor. Even sides like Panko Parmesan Asparagus with Lemon come together quickly with minimal prep.
Fewer ingredients means less chopping, fewer dishes, and a dinner that feels doable—even on your busiest nights.
🪜 Minimal, Streamlined Steps
Speed isn’t just about the clock — it’s about how manageable dinner feels. A recipe might technically take 30 minutes, but if it includes a long list of complicated steps, it can still feel overwhelming at the end of a busy day.
That’s why we create most of our 28-minute recipes with a handful of clear, doable steps — usually about four or five. Fewer steps mean less back-and-forth, less overthinking, and fewer chances to feel frazzled while you’re helping with homework or answering a million questions at the same time.
Recipes like our Panko Pork come together in four simple steps, while this Vegetable Pasta is ready in just three. Both prove streamlined cooking can still deliver a complete, satisfying dinner. When the steps are clear and manageable, the whole process feels lighter — even on a busy weeknight.

🧒🏻 How We Design Dinners for Picky-Eaters
Many of our 28-minute dinners are designed to make dinner work for picky eaters. From kid-sized bites and fun presentations to easy topping choices, these meals intend to help everyone at the table feel comfortable and confident. Some recipes also include “hidden” vegetables, finely chopped or blended into sauces, so kids get balanced nutrition without overwhelming textures. Checkout our dinner planning tool for tips on choosing the right picky-eater-friendly recipe for your selective eater.
Note: Keep an eye out for the dedicated “Picky Eater Tips” section in every recipe — you’ll find simple swaps, flexible topping ideas, and practical ways to make dinner feel more approachable (and less like a negotiation).

🖍️ Keeping Kids Engaged While You Cook
Let’s be honest — kids still need our attention, even when we’re trying to get dinner on the table. That’s why every Platein28 recipe includes two simple activity options: kids can help with age-appropriate cooking tasks or work on a seasonal or food-related craft (often tied to the recipe you’re making). You can learn more about why we use crafts during dinner prep in our Craft and Dinner Guide. It’s a flexible approach that keeps kids engaged and makes dinner prep feel more manageable. Just look for the dedicated sections in each recipe outlining both options.
Note: If your kid isn’t into crafts, we have a full list of other activities that kids can do while you cook dinner.

Put ingredients back in the pantry or fridge as soon as you’re done with them, and clean as you cook to keep dishes from piling up. We also like to keep a small bowl nearby for scraps and wrappers so I’m not making constant trips to the trash can.
