✔️ Three Reasons to Cook with Your Kids
So what are the benefits of cooking with our kids? Check out these three reasons to cook with your kids.
1. Cooking With Kids Helps Support Healthy Eating Habits
When kids get involved in meal-prep, they get to see what actually goes into their meals and understand the value of whole foods. And once kids witness how the ingredients going into their meal aren’t so scary or gross, they may be more likely eat the meal. In fact, a research study published in the journal Appetite has shown that involving kids in meal prep can increase kids’ vegetable intake. Cooking has certainly encouraged our kids to try new foods.
Grocery shopping is the first and easiest lesson kids can receive around healthful eating. How to choose healthy and fresh ingredients at the store is a skill that parents can teach kids early on. Grown-ups get the chance to teach kids what the ingredients are, where they come from, and why they are good for us.

3. Cooking With Kids Builds Confidence and Life Skills
Cooking helps build kids’ self-esteem. When kids are a part of the cooking process, they see the beginning, middle and end of a task. They learn that they can make things happen, with a sense of self-satisfaction. When parents ask kids for their input on a meal’s ingredients or taste, kids can feel like their opinion or ideas make a difference. That sense of belonging can foster confidence, for sure.
Cooking itself is also supports important life skills. Younger kids can practice and build their fine motor skills in the kitchen by completing simple tasks like chopping, pouring, and mixing ingredients. Kids of all ages can practice following directions, collaborating with others, and using basic math (e.g., counting, measuring, making patterns).
Note: We understand that the mood or circumstance may not always be right for a family cooking session. So, we also offer fun, food-related crafts for kids to do while grown-ups cook.
🧒🏻 Cooking with Kids Can Help Reduce Picky Eating
Getting kids involved in meal prep can change the tone of dinner—especially for picky eaters. When kids help make the meal, even in small ways, they feel proud of it. And that sense of ownership often makes them more willing to try what’s on their plate.
Simple tasks like washing vegetables, stirring soup, or adding toppings help new ingredients feel more familiar instead of “scary.” Over time, that familiarity can make a real difference for hesitant eaters. Even something as small as sprinkling cheese or choosing toppings gives kids a sense of control—without turning dinner into a negotiation.
