If you're scared of spiders, there's no better way to face your fear than with this silly and spooky spider treat! Even better, these sandwiches make such a great alternative to the plethora of Halloween candy and baked goods we see this time of year.
If serving at your next pumpkin-carving or Halloween party, you can also consider pairing these spooky sandwiches with our awesome skeleton veggie tray, Halloween fruit kabobs, or this hilarious apple teeth snack!
👍 Why Spider Sandwiches are Awesome
Delicious- These spider sandwiches pack all the classic PB&J goodness, with a delicious twist of pretzels and candy for extra flavor. Also, you can swap PB&J for any sandwich filling (like ham and cheese or chicken salad) - super customizable!
Easy to make- You'll likely have most of the ingredients for this recipe in your pantry, and no cooking is required! This Halloween treat is also so simple to prepare that kids can make it on their own, or can even be a festive surprise in your kids' lunchboxes.
Adorable- We love edible crafts, and these spider treats are as cute as can be! While we gave ours friendly smiles, you can easily make them spookier by tweaking their smiles into a more frightful expression.
🛒 Ingredients & Substitutions
Notes on key ingredients are provided below. Please see the recipe card for a full list of ingredients and quantities.
Bread- Sliced white or wheat!
Peanut butter- Almond butter or sunflower butter will also work.
Jelly- We love strawberry jelly, but choose your favorite flavor!
Pretzels- We find that stick pretzels work best for the spiders' legs.
Candy eyes- We used Candy Eyeballs for or spider's eyes, but chocolate chips also work really well.
Licorice- We used Twizlers Pull 'N' Peel to form our spiders' smiles because of the candy's flexible shape, but feel free to use whatever you have in your pantry. Red candy like Mike and Ikes would work well, or you could simply break a pretzel stick in half to create your spider's smile.
👨🏼🍳 Instructions
Step 1: Spread peanut butter and jelly onto your bread to form your peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Step 2: Use a round cookie cutter or lid to cut out a circle shape from the center of your sandwich to form your spider's body.
Step 3: Insert eight pretzel sticks in between two round slices of bread to form spider's legs.
Step 4: With dabs of extra peanut butter, use an extra pretzel stick to secure or "glue" two candy eyes and a licorice mouth to your spider.
✔️ Expert Tips and Tricks
- If you don't have a round cookie cutter, use the lid of a mason jar or the rim of a glass to cut out your spider's round body.
- To avoid wasting peanut butter and jelly, center your fillings on the bread before cutting out your circle.
- If PB&J isn't your kids' favorite, swap peanut butter and jelly for any sandwich filling they'd like!
- For a sweeter treat, use Nutella in your sandwich instead of PB&J.
- Make this spooky snack gluten-free by using gluten-free bread and pretzel sticks.
- To get kids involved, lay out ingredients so kids can assemble these Halloween spider sandwiches on their own.
🍽️ How to Serve
While we love to serve our spider sandwiches at Halloween parties, they also make fun additions to your kids' lunchboxes. We recommend pairing them with a healthy Halloween snack or side, like:
- Halloween fruit kabobs or other no-cook kabobs
- Carrot sticks
- Orange slices
- Grapes
- Sliced cucumbers
- Apple slices, or our Halloween apple teeth snack!
❓FAQ
Yes! We recommend placing sandwiches on a tray, covered with plastic wrap, and storing in the fridge until ready to serve. Note: You may want to add the pretzel legs as a last step right before serving so that they don't go stale in the fridge.
These Halloween spider sandwiches can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
