✔️ Expert Tips and Tricks

  • Be sure to use a sharp knife– like chef’s knife- to successfully slice your apples.
  • It’s best to serve cut apples right away, as they tend to quickly brown once sliced.
  • To keep apples from turning brown, you can place apples in a bowl and toss with a mixture of 1 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice for a few minutes. The citric acid in lemon juice helps prevent oxidation and thus keeps apple slices from browning.

❓FAQ

How do I keep apple slices from browning?

Apples tend to brown as soon as their cut sides are exposed to the oxygen. To prevent apples from browning, soak them in a mixture of 1 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice for a few minutes. The citric acid in the lemon juice helps to prevent oxidation, keeping the apple slices fresh and free from browning.

If you are planning to eat the apple slices relatively soon, you can also try submerging sliced apples in a bowl of cold water, which can slow down the browning process for a limited amount of time.

Can I slice apples ahead of time?

Yes, apples can be sliced ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 3-5 days.

Can I freeze cut apples?

Yes, apple slices can be stored in the freezer! Simply spread out apple slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and place in the freezer for a few hours. Once frozen, transfer apple slices to an airtight container and return to freezer for up to two months.

Should I peel apples before slicing?

The choice to peel an apple before slicing it is based on personal preference. Keep in mind that apple skins are rich in nutrients, so leaving the skin on your apple can help you maximize the fruit’s health benefits.
