✔️ Tips and Tricks
- Use a strong glue. We’ve tried so many different kinds of glue and find that hot glue guns works best on felt and cork, or a strong craft glue like Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue.
- To ensure the felt sticks to the cork, press down on the felt for a few moments while the hot glue sets.
- Give younger kids a hand by handling the cutting and gluing—especially if you’re using a hot glue gun!
- Complete the fun by adding play food carrots, paper asparagus and pop-up paper peppers to your kids’ veggie craft collection!
↪️ Variations and Substitutions
Wine corks-If you don’t have wine corks, try using recycled items like old marker caps, empty glue stick containers, thread spools, or lip balm tubes—all great alternatives with a similar shape and size!
Felt– No felt? No problem! Simply cover the wine cork in green construction paper or paint it green using Acrylic Paint (like we did with this honeybee wine cork craft), which dries quickly and adheres nicely to cork.
Glue– If you’d rather skip the hot glue gun, try Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue—we love it because it’s non-toxic and classroom-safe! Another great option is Elmer’s Craft Bond All Purpose Craft Glue.
Pom Poms-In place of pom poms, you can use cotton balls dipped in green paint or crumpled green tissue paper.
Google eyes– If you don’t have googly eyes, simply draw them on your broccoli craft with your Sharpie. You can also cut small circles from white paper or felt and add black dots in the center to create cute, easy eyes for your wine cork figurines.
❓FAQ
You can find wine corks at craft stores and online, or try asking at restaurants, wine shops, and wineries. Some recycling centers even have them available for reuse!
We don’t usually clean our wine corks before crafting, but if yours are particularly grimy, you can clean them by gently wiping them with mild soap and water or a mix of water and white vinegar. Make sure wine corks are completely dry before crafting.
If your vegetable figurine keeps tipping over, try trimming the uneven or bumpy part of the base to create a flat surface. This step should be done by an adult, not a child. Or, glue the bottom of your veggie figurine to a small square of cardboard for extra support.
