👌Why We Love to Dye Pasta

Simple and quick– Once you mix the pasta with the vinegar and food coloring, it should dry in 10-15 minutes!

Works for any pasta- You can color just about any kind of pasta- make rainbow spaghetti, colored shells, bow ties, you name it! You can also dye small pastas or grains like orzo and rice.

A little goes a long way– You only need a few drops of food coloring to really brighten your pasta with color!

Beautiful pasta crafts! Once you learn how to dye noodles or other pastas, you can use dyed pasta to create beautiful artwork, like letter and number art projects, jewelry, picture frames and more!

Notes on Supplies:

  • Bags – We used Ziploc sandwich bags, but you could use any plastic bags when dying pasta. If you don’t have bags or don’t want to be wasteful, just stir noodles and dye together in separate bowls.
  • Food coloring – We used 3 food dye colors, which gave a nice rainbow palette. But you can use however many you like. Gel food coloring would also work.
  • Parchment paper This is important for protecting your surface. You can lay the parchment paper on a cutting board, baking sheet or other washable and flat surface.

📝 How to Dye Pasta with Vinegar

Step 1: Cover a flat surface with parchment paper. This will give your pasta a nice spot to dry!

Step 2: Pour uncooked pasta into a plastic Ziploc bag. Add 1 teaspoon of white vinegar and a few drops of food coloring.

Step 3: Seal bag and shake vigorously until pasta is evenly colored. This is the fun part!

✏️ Expert Tips and Tricks

  • Protect your space– We recommend having wet paper towels handy for spills and messes.
  • Don’t overdo it with the liquid-  It doesn’t take much to turn the shells into a cool color. Only mix 1 t of vinegar with a couple drops of food coloring. Too much liquid will pool inside the pasta and make it hard to dry.
  • Use enough pasta– Make sure there is enough pasta in each bag of coloring/vinegar. If the amount of pasta is too small, the pasta will be swimming in liquid.
  • Spread out dyed pasta as it dries– Spread the pasta as widely as you can on parchment paper so the individual pieces will dry. And try to keep the colors separate.
  • Keep in mind that it may be hard to fully color pasta with folds and crevices (like bow tie pasta). These noodles may need slightly more food coloring.

  1. Susan Dodson says:

Can pasta that isn’t dried all the way go in an oven to finish drying?

    1. Hi Susan! I’ve never tried that, so I can’t give you a definitive answer. I do know that putting uncooked pasta in the oven can make it more brittle and might change the texture/color a bit. Let us know what happens, if you try it! ❤️
