🛒 Ingredients You’ll Need

See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and quantities.

Ingredients for pizza biscuits made in muffin tins.
  • Biscuits — We love Pillsbury Grands. Just make sure to avoid the flaky layers variety — you want the regular kind for a fluffy, doughy base.
  • Pizza or Marinara Sauce — Rao’s Homemade Pizza Sauce is our go-to, but any sauce you love will work!
  • Mozzarella Cheese — Classic mozzarella is our pick, but cheddar, provolone, or an Italian blend all work great.
  • Melted Butter — Adds rich, golden flavor to the dough.
  • Seasonings — Garlic powder, parsley flakes, dried basil, dried oregano, and dried thyme give these pizza muffins their irresistible flavor.

🧑🏽‍🍳 Kids Cooking Steps

  • Cut the biscuits — Kids can cut the biscuit dough into small pieces using kitchen shears — a much safer option than a knife and just as easy.
  • Let kids measure and pour the melted butter, seasonings, and pizza sauce right into the bowl. A Pyrex measuring cup makes this step mess-free and easy for little hands.
  • Fill the muffin tin — Kids love being in charge of scooping and distributing the dough into the muffin tin. It’s the kind of hands-on step that makes them feel like a real chef!

🤔 Which Biscuits Work Best — Canned or Homemade?

The good news is that both options work great for pizza muffins — it really comes down to how much time you have and what you have on hand!

Canned: For the quickest and easiest choice we opt for canned biscuit dough from the store, like Pillsbury Grands Biscuits. It’s convenient, consistent, and the dough holds it shape perfectly in a muffin tin. It also puffs up beautifully in the oven giving you that thick, fluffy base that kids love.

Homemade: If you have a little extra time, traditional homemade biscuits make a very flavorful base. They’re flakier and more structured than the other options but require a bit more prep work. Worth it for a weekend when you’re not in a rush!

🧀 Fun Topping Ideas and Variations

  • Mix in your favorites — Diced pepperoni, ham, crumbled sausage, mini meatballs, or chopped veggies like bell peppers, black olives, and tomatoes all make great additions. Just toss them into the bowl with the dough before filling the muffin tin!
  • Turn up the heat — Sprinkle in red pepper flakes for an added kick. Perfect for the adults while keeping the kids’ batch mild.
  • Try different dipping sauces — Ranch dressing, buffalo sauce, and blue cheese are all great alternatives to marinara for these pizza muffins.

👦🏼 Tips for Picky Eaters

  • Let the kids build their own — Let each kid customize their own pizza muffins with toppings of their choice. It’s a fun way to get picky eaters excited about dinner and guarantees everyone gets exactly what they want.

✔️ Tips for Perfect Pizza Muffins

  • Cut biscuits into six even pieces — Use kitchen shears  to cut each biscuit in half and then into thirds. This gives you the perfect size for a standard muffin tin.
  • Grease the pan generously — Don’t skip this step! A well-greased muffin tin is the difference between pizza muffins that pop right out and ones that stick and fall apart.
  • Simplify the seasonings — Don’t have all five spices on hand? No problem! Swap the garlic powder, parsley flakes, dried basil, dried oregano, and dried thyme for a pre-mixed Italian seasoning blend and a pinch of garlic powder. You’ll get very similar flavor with half the measuring!
  • Don’t overfill — Fill each muffin cup about ¾ of the way full. Overfilling causes the toppings to spill over the sides and makes them harder to remove cleanly.
  • Go easy on the sauce — Just ¼ cup of pizza sauce is all you need for the whole batch. It sounds like a little but trust us — too much sauce makes the bottoms soggy, and you’ll want plenty left over for dipping anyway!
  • Loosen before removing — Run a knife gently around the edges of each pizza muffin before lifting them out of the tin.
  • Serve immediately — Pizza muffins are best straight out of the oven with a side of warmed pizza or marinara sauce for dipping.

🧊 How to Store and Reheat Pizza Muffins

Storing: Once completely cooled, store pizza muffins in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days or in the freezer for up to three months.

Reheating: For best results, reheat in the oven or toaster oven at 350°F for 5-8 minutes or until warmed through. This keeps the outside crispy and the inside soft — just like fresh out of the oven! You can also reheat in the microwave in a pinch, but keep in mind the biscuit base may lose its crispy texture.

Freezing Tips: Once completely cooled, wrap each pizza muffin individually in plastic wrap and place in a freezer-safe bag or container. This prevents them from sticking together so you can grab just a few at a time — perfect for a quick snack or easy school lunch!
