An upcycled craft. These felt pumpkins are made from used tin cans, and we just love how upcycled crafts can teach kids the value of conserving resources and caring for the environment. Fine motor skills. Our felt pumpkin craft gives kids the chance to practice their cutting, drawing, and gluing skills. Moreover, it's so simple that kids can do most of it on their own.
✂️ Supplies for Felt Pumpkins
Notes on key supplies are provided below. Please see the "how-to" card for a full list of supplies and quantities.
Tin can- emptied, washed and died. Note: the cans' inner rim (where the lid was removed) can be sharp. To dull the inner rim, we wrapped it with a couple layers of tape.
Felt- You will need the essential colors for a pumpkin: orange, black and green! I buy felt measuring at least 12x8 inches so I can have plenty of material to work with.
Glue- We love Tacky Glue, but fabric glue or a hot glue gun will also do the trick!
📋 Instructions
Step 1: Measure and cut out a long strip of orange felt that is tall and wide enough to wrap around your tin can.
Step 2: Wrap and glue orange felt to tin can.
Step 3: Use black felt to cut out two eyes, a nose and mouth and use green felt to cut out a small stem for your pumpkin.
Step 4: Glue facial features and stem to pumpkin. Now fill with candy or utensils and enjoy!
✔️ Tips and Tricks
- The cans' inner rim, where the lid was removed, can be sharp. Therefore, to ensure safety, consider wrapping it with a couple of layers of tape to dull the edge.
- If you are having trouble with the tacky glue, don’t worry—a hot glue gun also works very well with felt. Just be sure to monitor little ones so they don't burn their skin!
- Fill your tin can felt pumpkins with candy, party utensils, or even flowers! For a fun touch, load them with a mix of candy, making them great for trick-or-treaters or party favors.
- Want to add some variety to your festive Halloween cans? Just decorate them with other Halloween characters like black cats, monsters, or Frankensteins! These fun designs will make your display pop even more!
❓ FAQ
We prefer to use Aleene's Original Tacky Glue for our felt crafts because it's non-toxic and approved for classroom use. However, hot glue guns or adhesive glues will also work, though they tend to be less kid-friendly.
Other than empty tin cans, you can cover and transform a ton of other recycled materials into festive art, like glass bottles, empty cans, or cardboard boxes.
