Why We Love these Homemade Shakers

  • No headaches! These homemade shakesr allows kids to create mini instruments that WON’T give grown-ups a headache when they play them around the house.
  • A pasta craft! Pasta is one of the best craft supplies and we almost always have some extra dry pasta handy for projects. We’ve transformed pasta into colorful letters and words with our Gratitude Words Craft, made pasta sunflowers with lasagna noodles, and adorable bow tie pasta butterflies.
  • Lots of playtime. We love crafts we can play with! Once kids create their shaker musical instrument, they can have some serious musical fun!
  • Simple supplies. The base of the shaker is something we should all have in out homes: a toilet paper roll! You simply close off one end of the shaker using paper and tape, fill it with pasta, and then close off the other end. Once the shaker is closed on both sides, kids can decorate the shaker however they’d like!

Notes on Supplies:

Pasta- We made this craft using leftover, uncooked orzo from our Italian Sausage Soup with Orzo Recipe. However, you can swap out the orzo for rice. More people have rice laying around the house, and it’s less expensive. In reality, any small uncooked pasta or rice will do the trick!

Decorations– While we decorated with markers and tissue paper, a variety of supplies may be used (e.g., markers, paint, tissue paper, decals, stickers)
