👍Why We Love Roast Beef Sliders
Packed with flavor- Coated with a tangy Mayonnaise spread, melted cheese and buttered Hawaiian sweet rolls, these juicy hawaiian roll roast beef sliders deliver a burst of vibrant flavors in every bite. We even scatter French-fried onions into our sliders for added crunch and flavor!
Crowd-pleasers- These sliders are perfect as appetizers or main dishes at parties, on game-day (like the Super Bowl!) or for dinner at home with the family.
Kid-friendly- These mini sandwiches are popular with kids and are the perfect size for little hands!
Quick and simple- Like all our recipes, these roast beef sliders on Hawaiian rolls come together in just 28 minutes, which make them great weeknight meals. Because there are fewer steps, kids can also help and take ownership of the meal-prep!
🛒 Ingredients
- Hawaiian Sweet Rolls. The rolls' sweet flavor compliments the savory taste of the roast beef and cheese. And did we mention how soft they are?
- Mayonnaise. The basis of the slider's spread, which moistens the buns and gives them an extra pop of flavor!
- Spices. Garlic powder and onion powder add so much flavor to the mayonnaise sauce.
- Stone-ground mustard. To mix with the mayo. Dijon or yellow mustard are other good options.
- Worcestershire sauce. Enhances the overall flavor of the mayonnaise spread and roast beef sliders.
- Roast beef. We prefer deli-style roast beef freshly sliced at the deli counter, but any roast beef of choice will work! Hillshire Farm Ultra Thin Roast Beef is another great option.
- Cheese. We love the creamy and mild flavor of Provolone, but sliced American, Cheddar, Muenster or Swiss are other great options.
- French Fried Onions- For added crunch and flavor when you bite into the sliders!
- Butter. Unsalted and melted for brushing on top of assembled sliders. Note: Given the sodium inherent in other ingredients, we recommend using unsalted butter.
- Sesame seeds. To sprinkle on top of baked roast beef sliders for extra crunch!
- Au jus sauce mix. For dipping baked Hawaiian roll roast beef sliders. We use McCormick Au Jus Gravy Mix which only requires adding water to the mixture and heating together.

👨🏼🍳 How to Make Roast Beef Sliders on Hawaiian Rolls
Step 1. Preheat oven to 350°F and arrange buns with tops removed on a greased 9x13-inch pan.
Step 2. In a small bowl, combine mayo, garlic powder, onion powder, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Coat the bottom half of the buns with the spread.
Step 3. Assemble the sliders, layering with roughly 3 slices of roast beef, 1 slice of cheese (cut in half and criss-crossed over the meat), and a sprinkling of french fried onions. Put the top halves of the buns back on, brush the tops with melted butter, and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Step 4. Bake roast beef sliders for 12-15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
Step 5. Prepare the au jus dipping sauce as per the instructions on the packet and serve with sliders for dipping.
👧🏽 Kids Steps:
- Grease the pan. This is an easy and satisfying task for little ones.
- Layer slider ingredients. Since we aren't working with anything raw, this task should be safe and manageable for little ones!
- Use a basting brush to spread the melted butter over the sliders. My daughter loves doing this cause "it's like painting"!
🧂Substitutions and Variations
Rolls- While we love the sweet, soft and chewy texture of Hawaiian rolls, you can also use Brioche rolls, pretzel rolls or any of your other favorite soft buns.
Roast beef- Deli-style roast beef works great, but you may also use sliced prime rib if you are feeling fancy!
Cheese- Feel free to swap or add more cheese as desired. It could be fun to use a combination of cheeses, like provolone and cheddar!
Sesame seeds- If you don't have sesame seeds, you can also sprinkle Hawaiian roll roast beef sliders with poppy seeds or Everything bagel seasoning.
Horseradish- For added spice, consider stirring a few teaspoons of horseradish into the Mayonnaise before spreading onto bread. Some mustards contain horseradish in theme too, like French's Dijon Horseradish. Or, offer horseradish on the side for dipping.
Onions- Instead of French Fried onions, you can also make and add grilled or caramelized onions for your sliders if you have extra time or interest.
🍟 How to Serve Roast Beef Sliders
Serve these delicious hawaiian roll roast beef sliders with au jus as an appetizer or main dish! We love serving these sliders with:
- Potatoes, like a baked potato, fries or tater tots
- Simple salad, like this bean salad or avocado and arugula salad
- Pasta salad
- Sliced veggies (e.g., celery sticks, sliced cucumbers, carrot sticks)
- Cheese pasta
- Coleslaw
🧊 Storing and Reheating
Store- While these sliders are best eaten right away, you may store them in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freeze-Sliders can also be stored in the freezer in an airtight container (ideally wrapped in plastic wrap) for 2-3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
Reheat- I recommend reheating sliders in the oven, covered in foil, for 10-15 minutes at 375°.
✔️ Expert Tips & Tricks
- If using King's Hawaiian roll, you can keep individual rolls connected when prepping the sliders and simply use a large serrated knife to slice slab of rolls through the center. After roast beef sliders have been baked, simply cut them into individual sandwiches
- To avoid soggy sliders, make sure that Hawaiian rolls are evenly sliced between the top and bottom.
- If slices of cheese are too large for sliders, simply break slices in half and then criss-cross them over the meat when assembling sliders.
- Don't overcook sliders. If you see the buns turning too brown too fast, cover the sliders with aluminum foil and bake them until the cheese is fully melted.
- Adjust sesame seeds as desired, using as much or as little as you'd like.
- Let sliders cool a few minutes before slicing so that sliders can settle and be less likely to fall apart.
👦🏼 Tips for Picky Eaters
🍅 Let kids choose a healthy side. Fresh veggies, like carrot sticks, celery sticks (peeled), or sliced cucumber all go well with these sliders!
🍅 Change up the cheese. Let kids pick their favorite. Cheddar, American, Swiss...the options are endless.
🍅 Offer different toppings. Onions, ketchup, pickles, mustard... kids can dress their Hawaiian roll roast beef sliders however they'd like!
❓ FAQ
Sliders are small sandwiches served on a small bun. They typically contain less meat or contents than a standard burger-sized sandwich and can be served as snacks, appetizers, or hors d'oeuvres for crowds or at parties.
Au jus sauce is a broth or gravy made from the drippings of cooked meat, like roast beef. "Au jus" is actually a French culinary term that means "with juice." The sauce is typically used for dipping or enhancing the flavor of such dishes as roasted chicken, prime rib or French dip sandwiches.
We do not recommend making these sliders ahead of time, as the mayonnaise spread may soak into the bread and make it soggy.
To keep sliders from drying out, be sure not to overcook them. If you see the buns turning too brown too fast, cover the sliders with aluminum foil and bake them until the cheese is fully melted.
To prevent these roast beef sliders on Hawaiian rolls from getting soggy, ensure that you slice rolls evenly, maintaining a consistent balance between the top and bottom.
